Projectors 2,600–3,500 ANSI lumens — for the living room

Every projector page has a throw distance calculator: enter the distance from the wall and you will see the screen size in your own room.
Evening · 2,600–3,500 ANSI
The catalogue is split by brightness, not by labels like “home” or “office”. The same projector sits in a living room and in a meeting room — and puts out exactly the same amount of light. That is the one number that tells you where it will work. 2,600–3,500 ANSI lumens is the evening range: a lamp is on in the room and the picture still does not fade.
What an ANSI lumen is
A lumen is a unit of light output. ANSI is the international rule for measuring it: a meter takes readings at nine points across the screen and returns the average. A cheap projector counts its own “lumens” by its own method, so its figure simply does not compare to ANSI.
What 2,600–3,500 actually buys you
In full darkness a 100″ screen needs 1,200 lumens — that is ProjectorCentral’s calculation. But the moment you switch a lamp on, its light mixes into the image and colours are the first thing to fade. The Epson PowerLite 955WH delivers 3,200 lumens of white and exactly the same in colour — so with the lights on the picture does not turn grey, it stays saturated.
Brightness is screen size
Light spreads across the whole screen area, and area grows faster than the diagonal. Double the diagonal and the area is four times larger, so every centimetre receives four times less light. That is why one machine looks rich at 100″ and already washes out at 150″. The 2,600–3,500 headroom is yours to spend: either a bigger screen, or the same 100″ without turning the lights off. If you only ever watch in the dark, the range below is enough.
You can turn brightness down, never up
One room in the evening is really two: with the ceiling light and without it. The projector, meanwhile, is one. Full power when the lights are on; economic mode once you switch them off and settle in for a film. On the Optoma HD142X economy cuts brightness by 20%, quietens the fan and stretches the lamp from 5,000 to 8,000 hours. Spare headroom is removed in a second. Headroom you never had will never appear.
Rated lumens and measured lumens are different numbers
Even honest brands write optimistic spec sheets. The Casio XJ-F211WN is rated at 3,500 lumens, while ProjectorReviews measured 2,972 in its brightest mode. That is roughly a 15% gap, and the machine still lands inside this range. Which is exactly why we sort the catalogue by measured ANSI rather than by the printing on the box.
Lamp or laser is a choice, not a ranking
This is the only range where you get both, so the decision is yours. A lamp emits a continuous spectrum close to daylight, and that natural colour is precisely why home cinema still loves it; it is replaceable, costs $30–100 and takes a few minutes to fit. Laser and LED are never replaced at all: the Optoma ZW350 gives 3,500 lumens from a DuraCore engine rated at 30,000 hours, with a sealed IP6X optical block and no filters; the Casio XJ-M251 and XJ-A257 give 3,000 lumens from a laser + LED hybrid over 20,000 hours. One is about colour, the other about peace of mind.
The sweet spot between price and capability
Every extra hundred lumens costs something: a stronger light source, a larger lens, more serious cooling, a heavier chassis. 2,600–3,500 is the shelf where the price curve has not yet turned upwards, while the capability already covers everything you do at home. A cheap LED unit promises “5,000 lumens” for pocket money: in the dark you might not catch the substitution, but switch a lamp on and it becomes obvious in a second. 90-day warranty, pickup in Lviv, shipping with no prepayment.
